You should bring a towel, swimwear (close-fitting as it is more comfortable under a wetsuit), flip-flops, sunscreen, and water shoes in winter.

All equipment is included in the surf lesson. In addition to a surf or paddleboard, we will provide you with a wetsuit.

Our lessons consist of a brief theoretical introduction where the surf instructor explains the basics of surfing, essential surfing safety rules, and the technique of standing up on the board.

If you already have some surfing experience, the instructor will ask you some questions to get an idea of your level of knowledge to see whether there are any aspects you need to review.

Cancellation

Your booking will become valid after we receive your payment and send you a confirmation voucher.

You can cancel up to one day in advance with 100% reimbursement. We cannot reimburse later cancellations.

In case of cancellation from our side for the reason of unfavorable weather conditions including waves, we will agree on a different time or return your full payment.

At our surf school, we provide students with a solid introduction to surfing, equip them with the right gear, and give them confidence in and out of the water. We’ve been training the best surfers since 2003 through engaging and effective lessons.

The 2-hour surfing session is ideal for surfers of all levels. From your first day on a board to the proficient wave-watcher, we aim to help you get the most out of your surfing in our center in Castelldefels. Our lessons are always dynamic and fun, covering topics such as safety, steering, catching waves, and even mastering advanced moves.

Under the guidance of our top-class instructors, you will quickly grow to be more independent on the water. During the lesson you will recognize and handle different types of waves, master paddling technique, and, most importantly, have an amazing time surfing.

Our school is based in two locations near the city, easily reachable by car, bus, or train from the city center. Both beaches have shallow waters with just the right sized waves, making them some of the most ideal spots for surfing classes in Spain. We have our own channels on the watermarked with buoys, where you can surf far away from swimmers and boats. Of course, we also provide necessary facilities and equipment including wetsuits.

Need to know before you go

Our summer lessons take place in our center in Castelldefels (one hour via public transport), as there are no waves in Barcelona.

Lessons are available daily from 9 am to 5 am.

What you’ll learn

The main goal of our school is to provide a good introduction to surfing and the appropriate training, promoting self-reliance in and out of the water, using the right equipment, and giving you a fun start in this sport in conditions of safety and quality.

Goals of the course:

• Know the culture, history and philosophy of surfing
• Understand the sea (currents, wave formation, breakers)
• Know how to identify possible hazards and deal with them
• Learn surf etiquette and safety rules
• Warm up properly before entering the water (stretching, breathing, etc.).
• Know the different techniques for standing up on the board.
• Know how to avoid injuries on your own or in company
• Learn how to paddle out properly and the different techniques for getting through waves.
• Understand the equipment; use and maintenance.
• Understand the sea in all its dimensions and complexity so that you can surf safely all over the world, given that the conditions are very different on each beach

Our classes are dynamic and entertaining. We group our pupils according to age and level. So if there is a group with a more advanced level, we help them to make progress (learning turns, manoeuvres, technique, etc.) and to correct their mistakes. The activities are under constant supervision by our instructors. Our team consists of experienced professionals who know Barcelona’s beaches really well. They have more than ten years’ experience in the world of surfing, besides being qualified in first aid and lifesaving.

The ideal surfing beach

The Escola Catalana de Surf has its own special channels marked with buoys on the beaches at Barcelona and Castelldefels. Both beaches are ideal for novice surfers because the water is shallow and this facilitates the formation of low waves suited to beginners.

What’s more, the shallow waters ensure the presence of waves during most of the year, unlike other beaches such as in Barcelona or on the Maresme coast, where there is much less chance of getting good waves. For this reason, the Escola Catalana de Surf is able to offer 270 days’ surfing a year. We stay open in winter.

What happens in a surf lesson?

Our lessons consist of a brief theoretical introduction where the surf instructor explains the basics of surfing, essential surfing safety rules, and the technique of standing up on the board.

If you already have some surfing experience, the instructor will ask you some questions to get an idea of your level of knowledge and decide whether there are any aspects you need to review.

The surf instructor will answer any questions, put you through a brief warm-up session, and finally start the practical session in the water.

These are some of the things you will learn about during a first surf lesson, also depending on factors such as each student’s level and the weather conditions on the day:

• Safety and surf etiquette in and out of the water
• Entering the water correctly
• Paddling and position on top of the surfboard
• Getting through a wave
• Sitting on the board and the standby position

• Taking off and riding the wave
• Moving on the face of the wave
• Bailing out/kicking out
• Finishing the wave
• What to do if you fall off
• Return to the beach
